Are you looking for some delicious shredded chicken recipes to use up leftover chicken? Then check out these incredible tips on different ways to create an easy weeknight dinner.

The Best Chicken for Shredding

The best shredded chicken comes from boneless skinless chicken breasts. Boneless and skinless chicken thighs can also work well. If you prefer, you can cook a whole roasted chicken and then shred the meat right off the bone!

Why Shredded Chicken is Perfect for Meal Prepping

Shredded chicken is the perfect choice for meal prepping due to its versatility, convenience, and health benefits. This tender and flavorful protein option offers a range of possibilities for creating nutritious and delicious meals throughout the week.

One of the main advantages of using shredded chicken in meal prepping is its versatility. It can be easily incorporated into various dishes such as salads, wraps, sandwiches, gluten-free casseroles, soups, and stir-fries.

Convenience of Shredded Chicken for Meal Prepping

In terms of convenience, shredded chicken takes much less time to cook compared to other cuts of chicken. By pre-cooking and shredding a batch of chicken at the beginning of the week, you’ll have a ready-to-use protein option that can be added to your prepped meals effortlessly.

This time-saving aspect is especially valuable for busy individuals or those who want to streamline their meal preparation process.

How to Make Shredded Chicken in a Crockpot

One great way to make shredded chicken is in a slow cooker.

  1. Gather your ingredients: You will need boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, chicken broth or water, and any additional seasonings or flavors you prefer, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, or onion powder.
  2. Prepare the chicken: Rinse the chicken breasts or thighs under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Trim off any excess fat if desired.
  3. Season the chicken: Generously season the chicken with your preferred seasonings. You can use a simple blend of salt and pepper or get creative with other spices and herbs.
  4. Place the chicken in the crockpot: Lay the seasoned chicken in a single layer at the bottom of the crockpot. If you’re using multiple chicken pieces, try to arrange them evenly.
  5. Add liquid: Pour enough chicken broth or water into the crockpot to partially cover the chicken. This will help keep the chicken moist during the cooking process.
  6. Cook on low heat: Set your crockpot to low heat and cook the chicken for 6-8 hours. Slow cooking allows the chicken to become tender and easily shredable.
  7. Shred the chicken: Once the cooking time is up, remove the chicken from the crockpot and transfer it to a cutting board or a large bowl. Use two forks to shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces. The meat should be tender and easy to pull apart.
  8. Optional: If you prefer a more flavorful shredded chicken, you can mix in additional seasonings, sauces, or marinades at this stage. This will help infuse more taste into the meat.

How to Make Shredded Chicken in an Instant Pot

You can make a big batch of instant pot shredded chicken to use in your favorite recipes. Pressure cooking chicken to shred is my favorite way to do it.

  1. Start by gathering the ingredients. You will need boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, chicken broth or water, and any desired seasonings or spices.
  2. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and any other spices of your choice. This step is optional but adds extra flavor to the chicken.
  3. Place the seasoned chicken into the pot. Pour in enough chicken broth or water to cover about half of the chicken. This will help keep the chicken moist during the cooking process.
  4. Secure the lid of the Instant Pot and set the pressure release valve to the Sealing position.
  5. Select the pressure cook or manual function and set the cooking time. For boneless chicken breasts, cook for 8-10 minutes, and for boneless chicken thighs, cook for 10-12 minutes. Adjust the timing based on the thickness of the chicken.
  6. After the cooking time is complete, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release the pressure for 5 minutes. Then, carefully switch the pressure release valve to the Venting position to release any remaining pressure.
  7. Once the pressure is fully released, open the Instant Pot and use a fork or tongs to shred the chicken. It should be tender and easily fall apart.
  8. Serve the shredded chicken immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.

Ways to Shred Chicken

When it comes to shredding chicken, there are two main methods you can use: by hand or in a stand mixer. Let’s explore both options:

  1. Shredding by hand: This traditional method involves using your hands or two forks to pull the cooked chicken apart. Start by placing the chicken on a cutting board or in a bowl. Use your fingers or forks to tear the meat into smaller, shredded pieces. This method allows for more control over the texture and size of the shredded chicken. However, it can be slightly time-consuming and require some effort.
  2. Shredding in a stand mixer: This method is quicker and more efficient, especially when dealing with larger quantities of chicken. Start by cooking the chicken thoroughly and allowing it to cool slightly. Place the chicken pieces in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Turn the mixer on low speed and let it do the shredding work for you. Within a few minutes, you’ll have perfectly shredded chicken. This method is ideal for saving time and effort, especially in commercial kitchens or when preparing large batches of shredded chicken.

Alternatively, you can use a hand-held mixer to shred chicken if you don’t have a stand mixer.
