Dairy Free Honey Mustard

This 3-ingredient dairy free honey mustard recipe can be whipped up in just a couple of minutes!

The natural sweetness of honey adds a subtle complexity to the flavor profile. It provides a gentle and smooth background note that enhances the overall taste of the mustard. This sweetness not only complements the tanginess of the mustard but also helps to mellow out its sharpness, creating a well-rounded and balanced flavor.

Why You’ll Love This Creamy Honey Mustard Dressing

The best thing about this recipe, besides how yummy it is, is that is only takes 3 ingredients. You can whip it up on the spot for a great dipping sauce for chicken tenders, use it as a topping for burgers, or even whip it into a vinaigrette by adding some olive oil and lemon juice.

How To Make Vegan Honey Mustard Dressing

In order to make this homemade honey mustard recipe suitable for a vegan diet, you’d need to use a vegan mayonnaise (like the one I included below) and a different natural sweetener in place of honey. Agave nectar and pure maple syrup are great options.

What Kind of Mayo to Use?

  • Chosen Foods Mayo: avocado oil, cage-free eggs, organic vinegar, salt
  • Primal Kitchen Mayo: avocado oil, organic eggs, organic egg yolks, organic vinegar, sea salt, organic rosemary extract
  • Sir Kensington’s Vegan Mayo: avocado oil, organic aquafaba (water, chickpeas), fair trade organic coconut sugar, salt, lime juice, distilled vinegar, acacia gum, sunflower oil, xanthan gum, rosemary extract, black pepper, citric acid, mustard extract, lime oil

What Kind Of Mustard To Use?

If you have food restrictions it’s important to further investigate “organic spices” to ensure you are not consuming something you’re not supposed to, such as nightshade foods.

How to Use Honey Mustard Dressing

  • Salad dressing: Honey mustard can be used as a flavorful and tangy dressing for salads. Simply mix honey mustard with olive oil, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Toss it with your favorite leafy greens, vegetables, and protein for a delicious and nutritious salad.
  • Marinade for grilled chicken or fish: Honey mustard makes an excellent marinade for grilling chicken or fish. Combine honey mustard with garlic, coconut aminos, and some herbs like thyme or rosemary. Marinate the protein of your choice for at least 30 minutes before grilling to add a sweet and savory flavor.
  • Dipping sauce for roasted vegetables: Roasted root vegetables are already delicious on their own, but dipping them in honey mustard takes them to the next level. Serve honey mustard alongside roasted carrots, broccoli, or sweet potato fries for a tasty and healthy side dish.
  • Sandwich spread: Instead of using mayonnaise or other high-fat spreads on your sandwiches, opt for honey mustard instead. It adds a tangy sweetness that pairs well with meat and vegetables.

How to Store Dairy-free Honey Mustard

To store healthy honey mustard dressing, follow these steps:

  1. Transfer the leftover dressing into an airtight container: Pour the homemade dairy-free honey mustard into a clean, dry container with a tight-fitting lid.
  2. Refrigerate the honey mustard: Place the container in the refrigerator to keep it fresh and extend its shelf life.
  3.  Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks: Dairy-free honey mustard can typically be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. However, always check for any signs of spoilage before using it.

Remember to label the container with the date you made the honey mustard to help you keep track of its freshness. If you notice any changes in color, texture, or smell, discard the honey mustard as it may have gone bad.

Recipe Notes & Tips

Many homemade honey mustard recipes call for lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and olive oil. While you can use these additional ingredients to give it a more tangy flavor  and suit your personal preference, I wanted to keep it simple. Feel free to play with it a little to get the perfect flavors for your taste using the ideas below.

Add-ins and Variations

  • Dijon Mustard: Substitute Dijon mustard for the regular yellow mustard to add a tangier and more complex flavor to your honey mustard.
  • Spicy Mustard: Add a kick to your honey mustard by incorporating some spicy mustard, such as whole grain or horseradish mustard. You can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper to give it some heat.
  • Garlic: Infuse your honey mustard with some garlic flavor by adding garlic powder or granulated garlic to the mixture.
  • Smoked Paprika: Enhance the smoky flavor profile of your honey mustard by including some smoked paprika.
  • Chipotle Powder: If you enjoy a bit of heat and smokiness, consider adding chipotle powder to your honey mustard.
  • Curry Powder: Give your honey mustard an exotic twist by mixing in some curry powder. This will add warmth and a hint of spice to the overall flavor.
  • Fresh Herbs: Experiment with different herbs like thyme, rosemary, or basil to add freshness and aroma to your honey mustard. Finely chop them before adding them into the mixture.
  • Add Some Vinegar: Incorporate apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar into your homemade honey mustard for a tangy and slightly fruity taste that pairs well with many dishes.
